History
The School of Health Sciences (S.H.S.) was established at the University of Ioannina in June 2013, under Law 4009/2011 and in the context of the “ATHENA” plan for the restructuring of Higher Education Institutions, by Article 4 of Presidential Decree 105/2013 (Government Gazette 137/Vol. A’/5.6.2013). Initially, the School included the Departments of: a) Medicine and b) Biological Applications and Technologies. Subsequently, with Law 4459/2018 (Government Gazette 142/Vol. A’/3.8.2018) concerning the abolition of the Technological Educational Institute (T.E.I.) of Epirus and its integration into the University of Ioannina, the newly established Departments of: a) Nursing and b) Speech and Language Therapy were incorporated into the School of Health Sciences.
Today, the School of Health Sciences includes four (4) Departments:
Department of Medicine (established in 1977), by Presidential Decree 723/1976 (Government Gazette 262/A/06.10.1976)
Department of Biological Applications & Technologies
Department of Nursing (established in 2018), Law 4459/2018 (Government Gazette 142/Vol. A/3.8.2018)
Department of Speech and Language Therapy (established in 2018), Law 4459/2018 (Government Gazette 142/Vol. A/3.8.2018)
The School of Health Sciences aims to promote education and research in health, as well as the improvement of prevention, diagnosis, treatment, patient care, and rehabilitation.
In addition, it focuses on advancing education and both basic and applied biological research at the molecular and cellular level, including physiology, immunology, and genetics of living organisms, the study of ecosystems and biodiversity, and the evolutionary interconnection of life.
It fosters an interdisciplinary educational and research environment that equips its students with a broad range of knowledge while also promoting scientific discovery and innovation in addressing critical issues related to health, life sciences, quality of life, the production of goods, and the environment.
The challenges faced by the School of Health Sciences include the continuous upgrading of academic programs, the expansion of national and international collaborations, the tireless promotion of mobility and research, the ongoing improvement of infrastructure, and the attraction of new scientists and highly esteemed academics of great scientific value, who will inspire students with a passion for their discipline.
