The Department of Medicine of the School of Health Sciences at the University of Ioannina was established in 1977. It includes 42 clinics and laboratories, 140 faculty members, 31 members of the special teaching and technical staff, and 10 administrative staff. The Department currently has 1,433 undergraduate and 829 postgraduate students enrolled in MSc and PhD programs.

The objectives of the Department of Medicine are innovation, the generation of knowledge through research, the transmission of comprehensive knowledge through teaching, and the development in students of critical thinking, synthetic reasoning, and specific skills—essential tools for their scientific/professional careers as well as their social recognition.

The members of the academic community of the Department possess excellent scientific training and offer high-quality teaching and educational work at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. They demonstrably provide a high level of healthcare services and are engaged in internationally recognized research activity, as reflected in the Department's high ranking in international evaluations, its numerous international collaborations, and its extensive participation in research programs and clinical studies. Supporting these strengths are the modern facilities on the university campus and the proximity to the University Hospital of Ioannina, which is the largest in Northwestern Greece and one of the two largest hospitals in the country. This ensures outstanding student training and their gradual development into physicians who understand the pathogenesis, manifestations, and therapeutic approach to diseases.

In the recent evaluation of its Undergraduate Study Program by the Evaluation and Accreditation Council of the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education (HAHE), the Department of Medicine of the University of Ioannina was rated "EXCELLENT" across all ten evaluation criteria.
