Department of Speech and Language Therapy

The Department of Speech and Language Therapy of the School of Health Sciences at the University of Ioannina was established in 2018. As of October 2018, all staff and students from the successful Department of Speech and Language Therapy of the former Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Epirus were integrated into it.

The Department of Speech and Language Therapy aims to educate its students based on the application of biological and physical sciences in the assessment of human communication—voice, speech, and language—as well as in the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and scientific research of communication and swallowing disorders in both children and adults.

The curriculum includes foundational courses in basic sciences, medicine, linguistics, and psychology, as well as specialized courses in speech, language, voice, and hearing disorders, and courses related to new technologies. In parallel, the program provides for a substantial number of mandatory clinical hours (approximately 900 hours) under the supervision of professional Speech and Language Therapists/Pathologists in special schools, institutions, hospitals, and clinical settings. These placements aim to give students hands-on experience in the evaluation, diagnosis, and rehabilitation of individuals with communication and swallowing disorders.
